Koei Tecmo’s Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is heading to Switch 2 as a Definitive Edition, Nintendo confirmed during a recent Nintendo Direct. The upgraded release is set to launch on 27th February 2027 and is already live on the eShop for pre-order at $59.99 / £49.99.
What Is Included in the Definitive Edition
The Definitive Edition is not simply a straight port. Nintendo confirmed the package will include several meaningful additions over the original 2020 Switch release. Here is what players can expect:
- Performance boosts over the Switch 1 version
- More enemies on screen at once, fitting for a Musou-style title
- All Expansion Pass content from the original game bundled in
- A brand new Calamity Mode that significantly raises the difficulty
The Musou spin-off serves as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, telling the story of the Great Calamity that sets up the events of that game. It originally launched on Switch in November 2020 and was well received despite consistent criticism about its frame rate performance on the original hardware.
Not a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition – What That Means for Existing Owners
One important distinction worth flagging: this release is classified as a standard Definitive Edition, not a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. That means there is no Upgrade Pack path available for players who already own the original Switch 1 version of the game. Nintendo did, however, mention that a discount will be available for existing owners of the title, though exact details on that discount have not yet been confirmed.
Players will also be able to transfer their existing save data from the original version into the Definitive Edition, so progress will not be lost when making the switch. The lack of an Upgrade Pack option has drawn some frustration from the community, particularly from physical copy owners who may not qualify for the loyalty discount at all, as that offer appears aimed at digital owners.
Performance Was Always the Biggest Issue
Age of Calamity struggled noticeably with frame rate on the original Switch, especially during large combat encounters where dozens of enemies appeared on screen at the same time – exactly the kind of situation Musou games are built around. The game already showed a marked improvement when run on Switch 2 through backwards compatibility, so a purpose-built native port has solid potential to address those long-standing issues more thoroughly.
How much further a dedicated port can push things beyond what backwards compatibility already offers will be one of the more interesting things to watch when the game launches early next year.
Where It Sits in the Hyrule Warriors Lineup
The Definitive Edition arrives in an interesting position. A sequel, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment – themed around The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – is already available on Switch 2. That context suggests the Definitive Edition may be aimed primarily at players who skipped the first game and want to experience the story before or alongside the sequel, rather than at returning fans looking for a reason to revisit familiar ground. Whether the discount for existing owners is substantial enough to change that calculation remains an open question until pricing details are confirmed.
