Hideo Kojima’s spy action title Physint has found a new home at Xbox after PlayStation reportedly pulled the plug on the project, triggering a three-month search for a replacement publisher. The move puts Physint alongside OD, Kojima Productions’ horror project, which Xbox is already publishing.

What Happened Between Kojima and PlayStation

The split did not appear to be a mutual decision, despite Sony’s carefully worded public statement. Kojima himself took to his official English Twitter account to lay out a very different version of events.

“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project,” Kojima wrote. “Physint is an important project both to me personally and to Kojima Productions. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of Physint, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”

PlayStation, for its part, put out a statement framing the departure as a considered choice rather than an abrupt cancellation. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint,” Sony wrote. “We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”

The gap between those two accounts is hard to ignore. Kojima’s statement describes an unexpected cancellation notice and a desperate scramble to save the project. Sony’s reads like a business decision made in calm deliberation. Both cannot fully be true at the same time.

Xbox Steps In With a Ready-Made Relationship

Xbox released its own statement welcoming Physint to its publishing slate, though the specifics of the deal have not been publicly detailed. The relationship between Kojima Productions and Xbox is not new. OD, described as a horror experience rather than a traditional game, was already under Microsoft’s publishing umbrella, so Physint joining it represents an expansion of an existing partnership rather than a cold start.

For Xbox, picking up Physint fits a pattern of associating with high-profile creative names even as the company has cut its internal studio count significantly. Microsoft conducted mass layoffs and closed several first-party studios in recent years as it pushed resources toward franchises with more predictable commercial returns. Kojima Productions appears to sit in a separate category for Xbox decision-makers, with both OD and now Physint surviving the kinds of cuts that claimed other projects.

What the Switch Could Mean for PC Players

One concrete consequence of Physint’s publisher change is that a PC release now looks more likely. PlayStation has historically kept its publishing commitments either exclusive to PS5 or on a significantly delayed timeline before bringing titles to PC. Xbox, by contrast, has generally been more open to day-one or near-launch PC releases for the single-player games it backs.

Physint was announced by Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions a couple of years ago as a genre-defining action-espionage title. Kojima has previously said the project was inspired in part by his illness in 2020, and that he decided to make it specifically for Metal Gear fans. With development confirmed as ongoing, the game’s platform situation has now shifted considerably from where it started.

A Bigger Picture of Two Companies Playing It Safe

The Physint situation reflects a broader moment of caution across both PlayStation and Xbox. Sony has faced repeated setbacks from a string of live service games that failed to find audiences, leaving the company more conservative about which projects it chooses to commit to. Microsoft, while publicly enthusiastic about creative partnerships, has simultaneously been shrinking its internal development footprint.

Into that environment steps Physint, a single-player, story-driven action-espionage game from one of the most recognizable names in the industry. It is the kind of project that carries genuine prestige but also genuine risk, and Sony apparently decided the risk was no longer worth taking. Xbox has decided differently, at least for now.

Where Things Stand Now

Physint is confirmed to still be in active development under its new publishing arrangement with Xbox. No release date has been announced. OD, the other Kojima Productions project under the Xbox banner, also remains without a confirmed release window.

Kojima’s statement made clear he views Physint as one of his most personally significant projects. Whether the publisher change affects the game’s creative direction or timeline has not been addressed publicly by either Kojima Productions or Xbox.
